SEAWARD INN welcomes the Nautilus Brass Quintet, August 28th., for our Sunday Morning Live Breakfast by the Sea.

Nautilus Brass Quintet, based in Boston, Massachusetts, is an emerging chamber initiative with a distinct mission to promote chamber music through performance and education. After being named finalists at the 2010 International Jan Koetsier Chamber Competition in Munich, Germany, Nautilus gained momentum. Nautilus started 2011 being named the Resident Brass Quintet of the San Jose State University Summer in the City Music Program and were recently named winners of the University of Connecticut Brass Day Chamber Music Competition. They have also been recognized as semi-finalists in the international Plowman Chamber Music Competition and as finalists in the national J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition. This academic year, we are happy to announce that NBQ will be in residence at The University of Connecticut completing an artist certificate under the direction of Dr. Louis Hanzlik (Orpheus Chamber Orchestra/Atlantic Brass Quintet).

Andrew McGarrah and Caroline Mead in harmony August 21st at the Seaward Inn's breakfast by the sea.

After singing together for the first time in a school coffee house,
Andrew and Caroline have continued to record and perform together over
the past nearly two years. Focused mainly on vocal harmonies, the duo
have been influenced by bands such as The Weepies, Joshua Radin, Jason
Mraz, Colbie Callait and others. Just last year, Andrew and Caroline
won their high school’s songwriting competition with “We Grow Up Here.”
They have performed at many areas around the Northshore this summer
including The Gulu Gulu Café, The Newburyport Farmer's Market, and The
All Asia Café. They have also performed at a variety of benefit
concerts in areas ranging from North Reading to Merrimack, New
Hampshire. Currently, Andrew is entering his sophomore year at Trinity
College in Hartford CT, and Caroline will be attending Wesleyan
University in the fall. They plan to continue singing together in the
years ahead and hope you will come out to listen!

Born in Oslo, Norway April 2nd 1990, Felix Peikli ( www.kingclarinet.com)

found his way into music trough the local Marching Band at the age of 8. They picked out the instrument, which today seems to have been the perfect choice, a clarinet. 2 years later and demotivated to pursue the music in the marching band, Felix received a Benny Goodman recording by his grandfather. The motivation came right away after hearing the dazzling and amazing music that a clarinet could produce and Benny Goodman became the new idol. His first performance was during the Jam session at Oslo Jazzfestival in 2002. Too young to enter the bar, Felix and his mother Une argued their way in. Unaware that celebrities like Joe Lovano was in the audience, Felix played and was invited back the next day for his first hired gig playing with a visiting band in the Grand Hotel the Mirror Hall. This was motivation beyond belief and hard practicing layed ahead together with upcoming achievements. Felix participated in different contest such as AOM (local), OM (state), NM (national), UKM (nation) and won a series of prizes. Felix became a student at Barratt Dues Classical Institute of Norway and studied there with Fredrik Fors (from 2004 – 2008). He also was selected to compete on Nation TV and won the National Dreamprize in 2005. After that achievement, Felix begun performing heavily with about 3 – 4 gigs a week, while still in school maintaining top grades.

Felix has always cared about helping other people trough music and have always volunteered to play for people who need it the most, and played monthly at a center for people with amnesia. Felix became a student at Foss Music High school in 2006 and in the same year he won/received grant in ”the Grand Chance” on National TV. After that, Felix became a national icon and the official face fronting the art of jazz. Felix begun playing on National and International festivals, international appearances, concerts, etc. (such as in Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Croatia, U.K. etc.) and Talent.no became his main sponsor in 2007, working closely with Jorn Hoel. Felix received the Capital of Norway Honors Prize as the youngest recipient ever in 2007 and the same year, Felix attended Berklee College of Music’s 5 week Program where he was granted a Full Tuition Scholarship.

In his mission to help others through his music, Felix held a concert in 2007 in the relation of Harry Belafontes visit to Oslo, Norway, where all the money went to people with AIDS in the third world and ended up raising 5000 USD$ for that cause. In 2008 Felix had his ”Ready For Boston” concert as a token of his acceptance into Berklee College of Music the same year, and came back 1 year later (summer 2009) touring Oslo with his Berklee Professor Harry Skoler, playing tribute to Benny Goodman who would have celebrated 100 years in 2009.

Felix began his studies at Berklee College of Music fall 2008 and has been so fortunate to have the opportunity to study and play with/for many talented musicians and professors such as Frank Tiberi, Harry Skoler, Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Blanco, Greg Osby, Hal Crook, Joe Lovano etc. Felix has accomplished a lot more than most of his peers, and thanks his Mother Une and the rest of his family and friends who has supported him to reach to where he is today. Felix will always be on the journey for making the best music possible and helping others.

My name is Italo Cunha. I am 18 years old and I am a Jazz Guitarist/ Composer/ Arranger/ Student/ Teacher. I was born and raised in Brasilia, Brazil and I currently attend The Berklee College of Music on a scholarship. Born in 1992, in a musical family, I started playing piano when I was 4 years old and guitar when I was 9. By the age of 12 I was performing professionally with local musicians. Alek Razdan, ( www.myspace.com/alekrazdan ) a recently graduated senior from Rockport Public High School, has been passionate about music and its infinite possibilities since he experienced his first concerts at the Rockport bandstand as an infant. He made his public debut playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” on the recorder at the Old Firehouse Trust at the invitation of the late, famed Bobby Hebb, who was known best for his hit song “Sunny.”

His dad brought him to his first jam session at the Rhumbline in Gloucester, where he performed on clarinet, at the age of seven and he then taught himself how to play the tenor sax so he could participate in Rockport Middle School’s jazz band. In his early teens, he appeared weekly during the summer months at Captain Carlo’s in Gloucester, getting a cram course in jazz standards from skilled trumpeter Nancy Hildegarde and encouragement and support from co-owners Whoopi Goldberg and Jamie Kehoe.

Since then, Alek has had the good fortune to work with a multitude of talented, supportive bands and musicians and has shared the stage with the Megawatt Blues Crushers (winner of the Boston Battle of the Blues Bands), Roomful of Blues, Willie “Loco” Alexander, Barrance Whitfield, and What Time is It Mr. Fox. He also heads up two bands that perform regularly on the North Shore, A-Train and the A-Train Orchestra, and plays regularly with his high school classmates in the Polygroove Orchestra.

On May 17, 2011 Alek Razdan and Friends had the honor of playing a concert
at the prestigious Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport.

Barbara has sung her way through life in a variety of bands. She is currently singing with two groups: The Girl Next Door and The Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester. She sings lead and harmonies and adds an extra touch with percussion and harmonica.

Nancy’s earliest musical memories include harmonizing with her brothers to Rodgers & Hammerstein while they all washed dishes. She began playing flute in 4th grade and spent her senior year in London studying with William Bennett of the London Symphony. Recently Nancy played flute and sang backup vocals with the Brazilian band, Sonho Meu. In addition to flute, she adds backup vocals, harmonica and percussion to The Girl Next Door.

With Janice, it's tunes, tunes, tunes - a musical collage of singing, teaching, recording her own songs, hosting an open mic, harmonizing with The Terrestrials ... and of course, singing with the fabulous The Girl Next Door. She plays guitar and keyboards for the band, and does harmony arrangements at every opportunity. Performers, look out: she may sneak up on stage and sing harmony with you!

The Musical History of Fud

In the distant past there were choirs, clarinet and piano lessons.

After that came the electric bass. Oh, how he loved those low notes.

In the 70s and 80s Fud played the bass in the Ghost show and in the band Mona.

Fud is currently playing that same old bass with the Terrestrials, the Harmaniacs and mostly The Girl Next Door.

All these groups have three excellent singers, of various genders.

He is happiest when he can support and listen to fine vocal harmonies while he is playing.

Carol Leary (www.carolpleary.com ) is a vocalist in the greater Boston area whose repertoire encompasses music from the Great American Songbook as well as selected Pop standards from the 60’s to the present. She has worked with some of the best jazz musicians in the area, performing with 2-5 piece ensembles. Carol has appeared at many well known local venues including Angelicas (Middleton MA), Latitude 43 (Gloucester MA), the Lyceum Restaurant (Salem MA), the Chit Chat Lounge (Haverhill MA), Sally O’Brien’s (Somerville MA) and the Caravan Club (Revere MA), and is currently appearing regularly at Trattoria Bellamia in Beverly MA. Carol draws inspiration from the styles of Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London, Kay Starr, Peggy Lee, Keely Smith, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Astrud Gilberto, and Dusty Springfield but has developed a style that is uniquely her own. Originally from Amherst, New York where she studied folk guitar, Carol relocated to the New England area to attend Brown University, where she studied biology and music. Carol began public singing in 1998 at the Ballard Vale United Church in Andover MA and eventually chose to concentrate on the songs she loves the most. She has studied voice with Sandi Bedrosian at ‘The Voice Studio’ for the past ten years, and is grateful for the generous support she has always received from the many talented musicians in the area, as well as from her family, friends, and co-workers at Massachusetts General Hospital. John Hyde, who is a native of Beverly, MA. John has been playing piano since he was a child. At Berklee College of Music, he majored in composition while studying classical piano under Ed Bedner. After graduating from Berklee, he was swayed by jazz and studied under Charlie Banacas and Paul Schmeling. John has performed with a multitude of bands as well as doing solo work, spanning many genres of music including Jazz, R&B, Blues, Cabaret and Classical/Liturgical Music. He has worked with Bobby Hebb, Maria Muldaur, Whoopie Goldberg, Harry Belafonte, and members of the Room Full of Blues Band. He also played at the “Cheers” bar in Boston for 3 years. Most summers John works at the Lincoln Center in New York composing and performing the music for some of their outdoor productions. Recently, he was the music director and keyboardist for the play “Bass Saxophone” in New York City. In addition to writing and performing, John has a roster of private students who keep him busy teaching. He teaches all ages, levels and styles. He also performs throughout the Greater Boston area as musical director/arranger and accompanist for jazz, classical and liturgical concerts and often accompanies his wife, vocalist Sandi Bedrosian.

Seaward Inn is happy to welcome Barry Michaud to our Sunday Morning Live Series. Barry will be with us on Sunday May 29, 2011, entertaining our guests as they enjoy our our beautiful Sunday Buffet by the Sea from 9:00AM till Noon.

Originally from Maine, Barry moved to the Boston area to join musical forces with the Orphans, Jonathan Edwards and bands with long time friend Allen Estes. Settling in the Cape Ann area, he now performs throughout New England as a solo artist as well as with the Backwoods Ramblers band. With a relaxed musical style. You'll enjoy his songs of life, as well as a hint of Maine humor. You will especially enjoy songs from his current C.D. recording, "Better Late Than Never". Always personal, you'll be sure to enjoy his voice, guitar, and the stories they tell.

Seaward Inn Presents Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester May 22

We are pleased to welcome back the Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester for our Sunday Morning Live performance on May 22, 2011. Check out this video from their performance last Summer at the Seaward Inn.

As you can see the Honky Tonk Women sing in the style of the Everly Brothers and also perform and sing Doo Wop hits, as they incorporate catchy back-up vocal rounds, and blend smooth harmonies into each song.
This quartet of women and their well-seasoned voices will take you on a journey through the 60’s era. Their songs include top ten chartbusters from the legendary voices of Connie Francis, Patsy Cline, The Crystals, the Ronnettes, Dion and the Belmonts, Johnny Rivers, The Supremes, The Shirelles, The Drifters and the MaMa’s & the PaPa’s just to name a few. The band includes a variety of acapella, doo-wop, and four part harmonies included with acoustic guitar, harmonica and several popular percussion instruments of which the audience is always encouraged to explore to keep the beat and sing along with the group.

Finger style & acoustic guitarist, Sheila Jones Schrank, sings lead melody and alto harmony.
Sheila founded and arranges the music for the Honky Tonk Women. She started singing in bands at age 15 – 35, then 14 yrs. teaching guitar at North Shore Community College and is currently performing with her husband & guitarist Ron Schrank, in Second Wind.

Barbara Jansson’s sings lead and harmony often infusing a song or two with harmonica and tambourine. The songs of the Supremes, Leslie Gore & Brenda Lee are her favorites, Her musical career started at age 11, soloing, dueting and playing in bands and rock groups too numerous to mention Barbara has a variety of cd’s to her merit.

Caroline Haines sings both lead and soprano harmony. She is featured singing the Dixie Cups and Carole King classic hits. Caroline is currently performing with the Gloucester based acapella group Leven, where theatrics and eclectic song selections are both entertaining and cutting edge.

Elaine Persons is the Patsy Cline voice for the group, singing Walking After Midnight, Crazy, And I Fall to Pieces. Her keen ear for harmony changes helped the group revive songs from the Roy Orbison and Connie Francis archives.

Sheila concludes "the walks of life we take and the memories we create are all surrounded by music. Each song we sing bring us back to a 'first' time, a magic time when we were experiencing something never before felt or done before. We are hoping our songs will revive these feeling within you, too."

Angela has a hauntingly beautiful voice, folk-classical in sound, ranging from alto to soprano. Her soulful original songs are composed of exquisite melodies, woven with mellifluous, poetic and stirring lyrics. Her joy of singing and playing the guitar fills the room as she passionately showers her listeners with an uplifting spirit, delivering her message with a voice that soars over all. Angela plays acoustic guitar, delivering harmonious, often complex finger-picking guitar accompaniment to her singing.

Her songs are landscapes, reflections of nature, healing messages, and stories about the traumas and victories of living. She sings about the struggle of the true loving self navigating through the currents of modern world violence and destruction. Angela's voice is palliative, a sweetener to allow the hard knock and blunt truths of existence to be serenaded and elucidated.

Her voice is lush and alluring, and her lyrics dare to visit some of the most secluded tide pools of the human heart. It's a combination that continues to make listening to her music a profound journey -- one that Lori hopes will forge a real bond between herself and her audience. "I want people to feel like they've had an emotional experience when they hear my music. I want to feel like I've made a connection with them." A self-taught pianist, "there was never a moment when music was not there" for Lori. She began on her home piano as a toddler and joined her first band at the age of 14. Beginning in her college years, she was keyboardist and back-up vocalist for the Boston-based Bee Charmers, an acoustic/folk/rock group which offered her some experience in writing and arranging as well. During her 10 years with the Charmers, she also moonlighted with other bands, increasing her repertoire to include Motown, blues, classic rock and jazz. Sometimes described as a cross between Joni Mitchell, Aimee Mann and Alicia Keys, her influences include Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, Carole King, Liz Story and Sarah McLachlan. The result is an adult contemporary style infused with jazz, pop, folk and blues. In 2003, Lori put her songwriting abilities to the test with her first solo album, Bound, which is dedicated to the memory of her sister. Since then, she has performed avidly as a soloist, and has added her voice and keyboard work to the albums of many local artists.

Lori teamed up with guitarist/vocalist Fred Abatelli in 2007, a musical union that she calls "inevitable." "He paints more colors -- takes it to a different place, and expands the sound, making it richer and bolder." With Fred's help, Lori wrote and released Mystery, which made its debut to a standing ovation at Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham, Mass in 2009.

Currently, Lori and Fred are enjoying a full performance schedule, and hope to expand their horizons geographically as their reputation continues to grow. They also plan to collaborate on a new CD in the coming year -- recording begins in June 2010.

Fred Abatelli

He's only played three notes so far, but guitarist Fred Abatelli is already smiling. When he's performing with vocalist/keyboardist Lori Diamond, "it's a joy. The time goes by so quickly." Fred, who joined Lori in 2007, finds their current partnership to be the opportunity he has been searching for ever since he picked up a guitar at age 13. "Everything that I have done musically has prepared me for this experience." And this "experience" comes after a colorful career of performance and experimentation. Fred learned his instrument by playing along with records as a youngster in Queens, NY, and over the years drew inspiration from a variety of musical corners: The Beatles; artists from Sun, Stax and Motown records; rock; country; jazz and blues.

He began performing at local open mike jams during his college years, and played with many groups before becoming a member of the Long Island band Shotgun, a country group which also paid homage to rock and jazz. In the 1980s, Fred moved to New England, where he eventually became part of Biggs Band, a 10-piece Motown cover band that frequented the House of Blues in Cambridge, Mass. for many years.

In 2004, he was one of the founders of Too Many Drivers, an acoustic rock and nu-jazz group. Later, after that group's break-up, he re-vamped some of its recorded material into the 2009 CD "October Road," which features him on guitars and lead vocals.

It was in 2007 that Fred went to a local performance featuring singer/songwriter Lori Diamond, whom he had recently met on MySpace. After exchanging several friendly emails, the two agreed to try some music together, and "it just clicked immediately."

Fred and Lori have been a duo ever since, and it's a match-up that Lori thinks is destined to be: "I've never trusted anyone with my music the way I trust him. Not even close. We think alike musically.

Fred's solid finger work and clever phrasing (both on bass and guitar),can be heard on Lori's latest original CD, Mystery , which was released in 2009. Fred describes the palpable electricity between them as "magic": "Lori and I truly don't play notes or chords - we have a conversation. I'd been searching for someone I can communicate with like that. Lori gives me carte blanche for a huge amount of self-expression."

Fred and Lori have appeared in a variety of venues across the New England states, and are hoping to expand their performance bookings beyond that territory in the coming year. Also in 2010, the two plan to collaborate on a new CD, which they are scheduled to begin recording in June.

Sometimes people will ask us about our Sunday Morning Live Series. They are curious about it. Of course, the short answer is to invite them to find out for themselves. WOW... SUNDAY MORNING LIVE 2010 was a phenomenal season ... SUCCESSFUL and exciting BEYOND OUR Wildest EXPECTATIONS !

Our Entertainment Calendar was diverse where some of New England's finest musicians proudly showcased their music, as did Berklee's College of Music Students, two from overseas (Norway and Brazil).

The 2010 Series offered Pop, Folk, Blues, Acapella, Doo Wop, Zydeco, New Orleans R & B, and Celtic music... we even featured an American Idol Finalist! It was an incredible potpourri of music!

We are already busy at work searching for top entertainment for 2011...To kick off the season we have booked LORI DIAMOND and FRED ABATELLI once again for our MOTHER'S DAY BRUNCH! This dynamic duo broke all records in 2010, attracting a packed house! Reservations began coming in long before we even advertised!
